Connecticut winters make warm buildings attractive. Rodents find a place to hide when it gets cold, whether it’s in a garage, basement, crawl space, wall cavity, or a commercial building. In the summer, when they are able to get food and easy access to the indoors, they will move in. During warmer months, food and easy access can be enough to bring them inside. They need very little room. A mouse can pass through a gap about the size of a dime. A rat needs only a little more space. I check foundation cracks, utility lines, vents, garage doors, roof intersections, siding, and worn exterior materials because those are the kinds of places that can go unnoticed. Rodents move inside once they’re in. They can hide behind walls, run over ceilings, through insulation, and along plumbing and electrical lines. The droppings under your sink could be only one part of the activity. That is why I inspect more than one room.
There may be more than one opening you will find. A house can have an opening behind shrubs, next to utility pipes, under siding, around the edges of the roof, or where two sections of the house meet. Some are easy to see. Others are not, especially from the ground. During an inspection, I follow the evidence and look at the full exterior. I want to know how the rodents are entering now, but I also check where they could enter next. Sealing one hole while leaving the rest open does not get you very far. The whole structure has to be considered.

Mice and rats usually move when the building is quiet. You may hear scratching in a wall late at night, then hear nothing at all during the day. Droppings are another sign. And so are ripped food packages, chewed holes in plastic or wood, shredded paper, dislodged insulation, and nesting material shoved into a cabinet or storage area. The first indication is sometimes an odor. Sometimes it is your dog or cat staring at the same wall every evening. Do not ignore that pattern. Rodents can move well beyond the first place where you notice them.
Older Connecticut homes often have gaps caused by settling, weather, repairs, and years of ordinary wear. Newer buildings can have problems too. There can be ample opportunity for a mouse to remain in the utility openings, roof details, garage doors or exterior trim.
Routes include detached garages, sheds, additions, and crawl spaces. One connection between two structures may be all a rodent needs. I look at the way the building was put together, what surrounds it, and where the activity appears to be concentrated. Then I recommend work based on those details. I do not walk in with the same repair list for every house.
